Great Sand Dunes National Park – Late season Winter Storm – March 2013

I originally headed down to the San Luis Valley to photograph the migrating Sandhill Cranes, but when I arrived at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, they had already flown the coop, so to speak, except for a few stragglers.

On to Plan B. With a strong winter storm moving in I guessed that there might be some interesting photo opportunities across the valley at another of my favorite photo spots, Great Sand Dunes National Park, so headed over there to catch the late afternoon light. With the high winds, sand plumes were blowing off the dunes, combining with the darkening sky and evening rays of the sun to produce some quite interesting scenes. Below are a few images from that evening.
